It is the third day of Advent
God is With Us

Microscope Zebra DNA

God is with us in so many ways, if only we are willing to see Him. In other people’s love and kindness, moments of inspiration, progress in situations which seemed hopeless, and in the wonderfully created world around us.

I had the privilege of studying this creation at university, including a year studying genetics. The more I learnt about the detail of how human and animal bodies work, the more I had to marvel at the ingenuity of the engineering that makes it all work. For example, did you know that each microscopic cell in our body contains over a metre of DNA? A very complex folding arrangement compacts the DNA so it fits into the cell, and equally complex mechanisms allow the necessary bit to be unfolded when required. All without us being aware of it in the slightest, and all in addition to the more visible marvels of creation: mountains, lakes, flowers, birdsong.

Another striking aspect of studying science is that although scientific knowledge is so vast that one person can only be an expert on a tiny bit of it, there is still so much we don’t know. For example, nobody is certain how cats produce their purr, although theories have been proposed. And, while there are many theories, nobody can definitely explain why zebras have stripes. The more I studied, the more I realised there was to learn, but eventually, in any field, you come to a point where nobody knows the answers. Every new discovery raises endless new questions to be researched.

For me, the complexity of our world is a tiny glimpse of the unimaginable complexity of the One who created it.
