ChurchLive @ Holy Trinity Hull

Thanks for the explanation, Pam. I, too, get muddled with all the different terminology used by different churches. In the Methodist Church we have 'Lay Pastoral Assistants' who are employed (i.e. they are paid) by the Circuit as Lay Workers, often to fill a gap that would previously have been fille...

Weather!

Needless to say, there hasn't been the slightest hint of snow here :( I haven't seen any frost either, but then I've spent most of the past 4 days in bed, so haven't been out of bed early enough to have seen it even if it was there. I did go for a short roam on the Levels this afternoon, at which po...

Forgiveness Challenge

Just posting this in case anyone is interested. Desmond Tutu and his daughter are launching a new forgiveness challenge this week: 'We are proud to announce our collaboration with the United Nations for International Peace Day! The theme this year is “Forgive for Peace.” As the refugee crisis has ma...

Epiblog for the Feast of SS Peter and Paul

B12? Why doesn't that surprise me? Probably because I have been down that road myself... and some of what you had described in previous blogs set off some warning bells in my mind. I hope it's being taken seriously? The injections should make you feel a lot better, but my experience is that they don...

I haven't. However, I had a look on Amazon and thought they looked quite interesting :)

Are all religions the same if they have Love?

Ros You stated that you think everyone will be saved. Does this mean that Adolph Hitler will be saved, that Joseph Stalin willbe saved and that the head of Isis which is terrorizing Iraq, even if he continues with his current vilence will be saved. If this is true then Evil itself has no lasting co...

Are all religions the same if they have Love?

Qu 1. Are all religions the same if they have love? I'm not sure what you mean by this question, however... 1) I agree with Ernest in that all religions/faiths are not the same. They have different beliefs, different ways of worshipping and different practices. 2) I also agree with Ernest when he sa...

I got the same as Pam. However, in the space on the front board, where it normally tells you who is in the chapel, it had the message you get if you can't connect to the server.

A Christian Employment Support Group

I suppose Corbin, having thought on your original question, that prayer should be the first place to begin if a church is looking to help the unemployed... It seems to me that there is only one sensible response to that: :votive1: For you in your journey To be honest, I'm not sure what else I can u...

Community and suffering

I don't think it is suffering that promotes community so much as vulnerability. A small child, for example, may not be suffering, but they do need help and support if they are to grow and mature. In that sense, they are vulnerable. And it's that vulnerability that leads them to develop relationships...

women covering heads?

Hi mumblessed :) Interesting topic. Years ago, I attended a house church where all the women wore head coverings during worship (in the form of a simple scarf tied round the hair). It was a church in which male headship was taken very seriously and women were not allowed to speak out a prayer or pro...

Baptism or Christening?

(Re: Christening): "It's also a useful term for a service of Thanksgiving After Birth or Adoption, or a baby dedication service in other denominations , when there's no baptism,as Ernest points out." In my experience, most Baptists would be horrified at the use of the word "Christening" for a baby ...

Should Scripture be our only life guide?

In the Methodist church I have come across the Wesleyan Quadrilateral . This adds "Experience" to Scripture, Reason and Tradition: "Wesley insisted that we cannot have reasonable assurance of something unless we have experienced it personally" (from wiki). This makes sense to me. Once or twice, I ha...

Epiblog for the Feast of St Acca

:) Well you brought a smile to my face, if nothing else. Although, of course, smiles are even more fleeting than our lives  The Department for Work and Pensions said that there was "no robust evidence that welfare reforms are linked to increased use of food banks". They should try asking me. A...

lessons from life

Hi Reader! :welcome: The truth is that most of these problems were caused by my not listening to my wife or planning properly. This is interesting. I think some of us are much more natural planners, liking to sort out everything in advance so that we know where we are going, whilst others of us pref...

Substitutionary Atonement (SA)

I've been away from the boards for a while, so I have only just come upon this discussion, but some interesting points have been made. John Richardson's blog makes the very valid point that substitutionary atonement is classic Reformation theology. I think this is the reason why this understanding i...
