Re: The Quadrity

I'm sorry you find it upsetting, Marybeth. There's sometimes a fine line between creating a space for people to express different opinions and presiding over a bearpit! However, the price of allowing people to express their views is that sometimes more heat than light is generated. If you ha...

Re: The Quadrity

If I appeared to be *dictating*, or to *rule on theological matters*, I do apologise, that was not my intention. Rather I was just following normal accepted theological practice, which goes back many centuries. Was it not at Nicea that it was decided that there was only one Gospel of the Christ,(th...

Re: The Quadrity

Well I have studied a fair bit of theology myself, as have others on this board, and as far as I'm concerned your usage is extremely idiosyncratic. The fact that syntactically we can say 'gospels' means that it's a concrete as well as an abstract noun.- As I said, and demonstrated, there are many di...

Re: Help I'm dying spiritually.

Dear Selita I'm so sorry that things are so bad. Sometimes when I've not been able to pray I've just said to God 'I'd like to pray but I can't'. Even trying to pray is a prayer that he understands. I've found Jesus' prayer on the Cross - “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?' - has been someth...

Re: Prayer Requests

What words of comfort can you give at moments such as this?? You can't, but, if you are around, allowing them to cry when they need to without trying to cheer them up, and to talk about her when they need to without trying to change the subject is a big help. A lot of people shy away from gri...

Re: The Quadrity

The Gospel accounts were written well before the final canon was put together, yet they are still the accounts of one Gospel. As far as other gospel accounts are concerned, as far as we can tell they were written some time after the original four to be found in the NT. I have never before been aske...

Re: Saying 'I love you'

I'm convinced the Church of England only manages to carry on because it is powered by the prayers of its most elderly members. One of the most amazing things about being a curate was knowing that there were people praying for me very regularly, without knowing me or my circumstances very well in mos...

Re: Summertime

I'm spending a lot of time at the moment watching frogs.

The two frogs who appeared in what my OH calls our pond (and our son calls a large puddle) have recently been joined by three smaller frogs, they spend quite a lot of time with their noses poked out of the water or just lying around the edge.

Re: The Quadrity

In NZ service leaders that lead/ construct services other than the Eucharist itself, do not have to include a creed or a confession, or the Lords Prayer, in such liturgies. If this is the case, I would still be very surprised if it was permitted to include anything that contradicted the Trinitarian...

Re: The Quadrity

I note that the rubrics to the creed for the Eucharist in Common Prayer, states that either the Nicene or Apostles creed be used or *an authorised affirmation of faith*. Thus the C of E is in line with the Anglican Church, world wide in allowing an alternative. As I have said, you are welcome to ex...

Re: The Quadrity

The creeds do not actually say that God only has three aspects. In addition we don't always have the set creeds, but use newer versions, which can be found in the NZ prayer book. While there are variants on the Creed which may be suitable for different occasions, they are not offering alternative d...

Re: Prayer Requests

Not a stupid question at all London Lady. One of the very biggest ones. There are all sorts of 'theological' answers but through the death of my own parents the thing that has made most sense to me is that whatever the reasons for God allowing suffering, the message of Christianity is that he is in ...

Re: The Quadrity

It does not rely on the Bible that eventually came to the early church, but rather it is to be found in the Gospel. Again, which Gospel are you talking about? There were many more than the 4 which were eventually decided to be canonical and put into the Bible, so if you're referring to the period b...

How early are you going? Because of course the very early church didn't have a Bible!

Re: Things I want to know in Christianity.

I'm just having a look Glo - all the church history I was taught came on ministry courses - for lay ministry training and then for ordained ministry, but I'm sure there must be other courses around eg via the Open University. I was no good at history at all at school, but I found church history fasc...

Re: Things I want to know in Christianity.

Now all this does get confused by people say they are Chrisitians when they aren't trinitarian. Groups that I have encountered locally would include the Christian Spiritualists, the Jehovas Witnesses and the unitarians. The Christian Spritualists say that Jesus was spirit or a ghost, the Jehovas sa...

I am sorry to say that i am asking for prayer that this stage of dad's life is short and sweet. He has zero quality and no-one would want to end their life in such a way. Re: Things I want to know in Christianity.

An independent church will not have any teaching (doctrine) handed to it by a larger group or body. In practice they would probably take their interpretation of the Bible as their teaching (doctrine.)

Of course there are many interpretations of the Bible!

Re: Things I want to know in Christianity.

It's fine Hana, you don't have to post a reply unless you want to! By independent church I mean a church that doesn't belong to a larger group. Many churches are joined together in bigger groups such as the Church of England, the Methodist Church and so on, and they share a common view on certain th...

Re: Things I want to know in Christianity.

This definition of Papal infallibility is not quite correct. In your search for understanding re Christianity this subject will occur a number of times, and as it defines one of the main difference between the RC church and The Anglican Church, (Church of England), it will be good for you to unders...
