WOW, :flowerface:

First Day of Advent and a wonderful reflection, some great music and the graphics, WOW, WOW.

Thank you Caroline, Pam and all who've had anything to do with the production of the Advent Calendar this season! :thumbs:

Today's message reminds me so much of the Great Hymn "Breathe on Me O Breath of God".

Breathe on me, Breath of God,
fill me with life anew,
that I may love the way you love,
and do what you would do.

Day two is also brilliant. The quoted verse reminds me of the Poem by George Herbert Christmas. The second verse says:

O Thou, whose glorious, yet contracted light,
Wrapt in nights mantle, stole into a manger;
Since my dark soul and brutish is thy right,
To Man of all beasts be not thou a stranger:
Furnish & deck my soul, that thou mayst have
A better lodging then a rack or grave.

George Herbert Collected Poems "The Temple" (1633).

Day three Reflects on flowers and the power of nature. Reminds me of the words of
A flower of a Day by Dinah Craik (1826-1887) the fourth verse of which says:

Flower, thou and I a moment face to face--
My face as clear as thine, this July noon
Shining on both, on bee and butterfly
And golden beetle creeping in the sun--
Will pause, and, lifting up, page after page,
The many-colored history of life,
Look backwards, backwards.

Day 4 a great quote from Phillippians;

Somehow the passage reminds me of God's promise to Abram in Genesis 17:4-5;

4-5 I promise that you will be the father of many nations. That’s why I now change your name from Abram to Abraham.[a] 6 I will give you a lot of descendants, and in the future they will become great nations. Some of them will even be kings.

When you think of that promise, that they will form many nations (and becoming like twinkling starts in the sky my interpretation), in worship of God sounds to me quite apt.

A slightly belated comment on day 6.

I love the verse by Jonny Baker, but wondered how he managed to copyright verses from the bible? Genesis 1:1 and Revelation 1:8 for instance?

The music was also peaceful and restful, ideal for a frazzled brain this PM. :bye:

Well, he shares a few words with those verses, and is speaking on the same theme, but he doesn't repeat them, even in loose translation.

If he had made a new translation then he would own the copyright to that, as the creators of all the different translations of the bible own the copyright to their own translations - but, as I said, he hasn't done this.

His copyright applies to what he has written - the eight lines that you see there - and to any adaptations that people might make of them, which he has generously allowed by applying the specific Creative Commons licence that he has.
Kindness is underrated.

Day 7 a timely and brief reflection on us being "Like Stars forever". From Daniel, it reminds me of a passages from Psalm 8:3-6

3 When I consider your heavens,
the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,
4 what is mankind that you are mindful of them,
human beings that you care for them?[a]
5 You have made them a little lower than the angels
and crowned them with glory and honor.
6 You made them rulers over the works of your hands;
you put everything under their feet:

It's a pleasure Emle. :)

There is some wonderful music out there under Creative Commons licences. When we first made an advent calendar (in 2008) there was very little that we could use, but the choice is really good now. People are very generous. :)

Day 9 is a lovely reflection from Isobel and the music is also lovely.

When you study the stars in Astrology, I wonder if the ability to predict future events is something we might celebrate or should we think of it as some form of witchcraft?

My father read his stars everyday and wouldn't do anything that would upset the prediction in his start - I thought that his superstition was a a bit silly and I've always disbelieved any human being able to prophesy by a study of the stars.

God's creation isn't that predictable, and the mystery attached to our future is something which deepens my personal faith, as I put aside the need for certainty and surrender to his will. :thumbs:

Thanks be to God. :votive1:

Day 11 brings into fresh focus the need for us to be concerned for children, the poor, the vulnerable, to clothe the naked, feed the hungry and to visit those in prison. And a reminder that we can only do this with the Lord's help!!

1 Samuel 2:7-8
The LORD sends poverty and wealth; he humbles and he exalts. He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap; he seats them with princes and has them inherit a throne of honor.

me too!
In the triumph of prayer
Twofold is the spell.
With the folding of hands
There's a spreading of wings
And the soul's lifted up to invisible lands
And ineffable peace .....

Day 12 A take on Genesis - I love the image of God leaning back against a comfortable mountain :thumbs:

Wondering where it is, my own experience of mountains involved hard work, climbing and being pretty cold at times. So, a warm, comfortable one would be welcome. Just wondering if it might be Mount Zion?

Oh me too Ernest !!! I even called my daughter over to read it ...my vision was of a golden bracken clad mound of immense proportions acting as a cushion to God's weary body.

Super start to the day :biggrin:

Day 13 - Job!! How I love him.

From the depths to the heights,
from the North to the South and
East to the West,
Know him as the Lord.

Seems appropriate.
